Mike in his office, enjoying a cup of tea out of his League Against Cruel Sports mug. Since being elected in May 2010, Mike has been actively campaigning against the repeal of the 2004 Hunting Act. Mike believes that hunting foxes with hounds is a cruel and inhumane practice and will vote against any measure which would lead to the ban being overturned.
Three weeks after the election, Mike signed EDM 116 which states,
“That this House reaffirms its support for the Hunting Act 2004 and notes that there have been almost 140 convictions under the Act; recognises that the vast majority of the public support the Act across all regional, political, social and religious divides; and therefore believes that any attempt to repeal the Act would be a retrograde step and out of keeping with a civilised society”.
Mike is in regular contact with a number of organisations including IFAW, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which agree that the current ban on fox hunting should not be repealed. He has attended recent meetings with the League Against Cruel Sports and Conservatives Against Fox Hunting.
Showing his continued support for animal rights, Mike has also signed the following Early Day Motions:
EDM 66: Animal Testing And Household Cleaning Products
EDM 175: Labelling Of Products Made From Animal Fur
EDM 177: Racehorse Fatalities In The United Kingdom
EDM 260: Beak Trimming Of Laying Hens
